Samsö
Alljährlich wird die dänische Insel Samsö großflächig mit Plastikfolien abgedeckt, damit die Frühjahrskartoffeln besser und schneller wachsen. In den 80-ziger und 90-ziger Jahren wusste man nicht, was man mit den gebrauchten und schmutzigen Folien anfangen sollte. Über 15 Jahre sammelte man sie in einer Deponie, begrub sie unter dem Erdreich oder stapelte sie in Rollen in der weiten Landschaft. Durch Wind und Regen wurden die vergrabenen Folien wieder freigelegt und schimmerten aus dem schlammigen Erdreich und aus den saftigen Wiesen wieder hervor. Manche Polyethylen-Folien hatten körperlich erscheinene Formationen angenommen, andere lösten sich in unendliche vielen Stücken von Mikroplastik auf.
1997 wurden die kontrastreichen Schwarzweißfotografien in der dänischen Galerie "Image" in Arhus präsentiert. Einige Naturwissenschaftler und Lehrer waren von diesen Bildern so berührt, dass sie eine grundlegende Recylinglösung für diese Plastikfoliendeonie entwickelten. Einer von ihnen hatte darauf hin eine bis heute betriebene Firma zur Recyling von Kunststofffentern gegründet.

Every year large sections of the Danish island of Samsö are covered in plastic to promote better and more expedient growth of the spring potato crop. In the 80s and 90s, no one really knew what to do with the soiled, discarded plastic.  Over the course of 15 years, the plastic accumulated in garbage dumps, was buried in landfills, or was stacked in rolls throughout the countryside. Through the effect of wind and rain, the buried sheets of plastic were re-exposed, glistening from beneath the muddy ground and out of the lush meadows.
Some polyethylene films had taken on three-dimensional shapes, while others had broken down into countless pieces of microplastic.

In 1997, the high-contrast black-and-white photographs were exhibited at the Danish gallery “Image” in Aarhus. Some scientists and teachers were so moved by these images that they developed a fundamental recycling solution for this plastic film waste. One of them subsequently founded a company that recycles plastic windows—a business that is still in operation today.
